What is changing on January 1, 2027
At its September 2025 meeting, the AMA CPT Editorial Panel accepted three things for adaptive behavior services: six new Category I codes (carried as placeholders 97X1X through 97X6X), a revision of the 97151 through 97158 family and its guidelines, and deletion of Category III codes 0362T and 0373T.
The changes take effect January 1, 2027 and will appear in the 2027 CPT Professional Code book, which publishes late in 2026. Under AMA CPT rules the full descriptor wording is confidential until that edition is published.
Is any of this final yet?
Not entirely. In its proposed Medicare Physician Fee Schedule, CMS commented on the new and revised codes, but the codes are not official until they are released in the 2027 CPT Professional Edition, and the proposed rule is subject to a public notice and comment period. Payment policy is not final until the 2027 fee schedule final rule, which is expected in November 2026.
The practical takeaway from the ABA Coding Coalition is to prepare, but not to change EMR systems on the strength of unofficial descriptors.
How an operating system should get ready
The safe pattern is an effective-dated CPT registry: today’s codes stay active through December 31, 2026, and the 2027 set switches on automatically on January 1, 2027, with a crosswalk between them so nothing has to be renamed by hand overnight.
